The Joliet Police Department is investigating recent scams geared primarily toward our community’s elderly.
If you have an uninvited individual come to your door, you are cautioned not to buy what they are selling.
The recent scams involve individuals trying to lure the homeowner out of the house to observe trees that need to be trimmed, utility lines that may be down, gutters that need to be cleaned, or other type of improvements to your property. Once they get you outside, they use their cell phone to signal others in their group to access the residence. This is usually done in another language.
If you are targeted as a victim to these scam artists, please be observant and contact the Joliet Police Department immediately. Your help is needed to catch these offenders.
Residents are reminded to …
Keep your doors and windows locked at all times. If you hear a knock, go to the door but verify the identity of the person through a peephole or window before opening the door.
Keep the phone handy. If you have a cordless phone, take it with you when there is a knock on the door.
Be aware of your surroundings when entering your residence.
